From the War Office to Parliament: CSIS Celebrate 125th Anniversary.

Date
08 September 2015

Houses of Parliament

The 9th September will be a historic day, as Queen Elizabeth II becomes the longest reining British Monarch in history, surpassing her great grandmother Victoria’s reign. Longevity will also be celebrated by Civil Service Insurance Society as it celebrates its 125th anniversary at a special event held on the House of Commons Terrace. CSIS was founded in 1890 by Thomas Bryce, a clerk in the War Office, at a time when the Civil Service pension scheme did not include a death in service benefit. He recognised that colleagues were not buying life assurance with the potential for many widows and orphans to be left in hardship.

He led a deputation to the Civil Service Benevolent Fund (now known as The Charity for Civil Servants) to seek to persuade them to provide a life assurance facility.  The Charity board thought this inappropriate for a charity but suggested instead the formation of an independent insurance society and duly seconded a number of their own committee to help found CSIS.

CSIS remains to this day a not-for-profit insurance intermediary offering Home, Motor and Travel insurance to civil and public servants and their partners. All surplus income is donated to the CSIS Charity Fund for distribution to civil and public service charities across the UK. In the last 6 years alone over £4,000,000 has been distributed. Speaking today at the CSIS head office, Chief Executive Kevin Holliday said “We are immensely proud that we have been able to maintain such a unique business model for 125 years. In doing so we have managed to help many charitable organisations and many more people in need or hardship. I truly believe that CSIS has a vital role to play in the generation of income for our charity partners and hope we continue to offer support for many years to come”

From a bright vision in a dark Victorian war office to a thriving modern “not for profit” organisation celebrating 125 years of service, CSIS’ unique place in the insurance industry has become one that depends on the loyalty and support of its customers and CSIS has always placed customer service at the heart of its business.

CSIS would like to extend its best wishes to Her Majesty the Queen on this momentous day.
